ARDEA PACIFICUM 2024 Petit Verdot Seawater Blend
A new addition to the PACIFICUM COLLECTION, inspired by a tradition from Imperial Rome whereby a trace of seawater is blended into finished wine. Here,The HERON, our pure Petit Verdot, receives a Pacific infusion, thus becoming ARDEA PACIFICUM (Ardea being Latin for Heron). Seawater was harvested beyond the Golden Gate Bridge, where the frigid currents of the Pacific Ocean course along the San Francisco Bay, The objective for the Romans was probably two-fold - to both preserve the wine and to accentuate its taste.
The resulting blend accentuates Petit Verdot's violet and fennel notes while softening its powerful tannins. Rich and inky yet surprisingly approachable in its youth, the wine promises to soar with cellaring. Fruit from Star Vineyard in Rutherford was hand-harvested and naturally fermented with the vineyard's indigenous yeast. It is bottled unfiltered and unfined.
